Who is Tara?

*** In this print, Tara is dancing on Shiva after having destroyed all the demons. Their funeral pyres burn in the background. Note that she has a cobra out of her crown similar to the Egyptian uraeus, indicating an altered state of consciousness. Entheogenic communions were used by ancient warriors to make them brave before battle.

Tara is said to have been born from the water, like Aphrodite. Her iconography is related to that of Mary, who is called Stella Maris (Star of the Sea), and foam-born Venus/ Aphrodite associated with the Morning/ Evening Star of Venus. Tara is best understood as the original archetype for the Black Madonna that later became known as Mary Magdalene.

Thus, Tara (Kali) is the destructive Shaivist persona of the planet Venus while Vena is the creative Brahmanical identity. These are probably the source inspiration behind the two Biblical Marys.
